Unveiling of Zurab Tsereteli’s Monument to Pyotr Stolypin and Opening of His Solo Show in Ulyanovsk

On September 26, 2012 in Ulyanovsk there was an unveiling ceremony for the monument to one of the eminent statesman of Imperial Russia and author of radical agrarian reforms Pyotr Stolypin. The monument created by the People’s Artist of the USSR and Russian Federation, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli has been placed near the building of the State Agricultural Academy in the workers’ town of Oktyabrsky near Ulyanovsk.

The unveiling of the monument has been timed to the 150th birth anniversary of Pyotr Stolypin, the Prime Minister and leader of the third Duma from 1906-1911. Zurab Tsereteli presented his monument as a gift to the Ulyanovsk Region in honor of the 70th anniversary of the State Agricultural Academy which had been named after Pyotr Stolypin to commemorate the event. At the unveiling ceremony the Governor of the Ulyanovsk Region S.I. Morozov highly appreciated Zurab Tsereteli’s gift and expressed his regret, that the bust of Pyotr Stolypin in the downtown of the city by a Spanish sculptor destroyed in 1917 had not been recreated. In response, Zurab Tsereteli expressed his readiness to execute the commission.

On September 26, Zurab Tsereteli also took part in the opening of his solo show in Ulyanovsk and in the inauguration of the international exhibition “Plastov’s Autumn” where there was an award ceremony for A.A. Plastov’s international prize in fine arts with the prize money of 10 million roubles for winners in 16 nominations.

Zurab Tsereteli was awarded a prize of one million roubles “For the Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion of Fine Arts”. Well-known for his charitable activity Zurab Tsereteli immediately donated it to the Ulyanovsk regional art school. The winner in the nomination “World Renowned Names” (one million roubles) was the People’s Artist of the USSR, Russian Federation and Azerbaijan Tair Salakhov.

On September 27, 2012 Zurab Tsereteli gave a master class in painting for teachers and students of art institutions in Ulyanovsk.
