The Special Award of the City of New York Was Presented to Zurab Tsereteli for His Contribution to the Promotion of Closer Cultural Relations between the United States and Russia

Zurab Tsereteli has been honored with a Special Award of the City of New York as one of the most prominent representatives of the Russian-speaking community who made a significant contribution to the promotion of closer cultural relations and a dialogue between the United States and Russia.

The celebration in honor of the renowned Russian artist and sculptor took place on Wednesday in the Metropolitan Museum within the framework of the Festival “Our Legacy” annually held in New York.

The Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg congratulated Zurab Tsereteli in person. He has noted, that New York is one of the most international cities in the world. “The Festival “Our Legacy” is aimed to show the rich cultural variety of the city where live immigrants from many cities of Russia – from Odessa to the Siberia” – said Bloomberg. “The Festival glorifies Russian cuisine, art, sports, entertainments and ballet, of course. It also showcases the achievements of Russian-born Americans in New York”.

Tsereteli has presented as a gift to the Mayor his still life with sunflowers painted by him last year during one of his stays in New York.

American and Russian masters of culture took part in the concert in honor of the event in the Metropolitan Museum attended by celebrated figures of the Russian-speaking community in New York, representatives of the New York authorities and diplomatic corps in New York, including the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, Russian Consul General in New York Andrey Yushmanov.
