PRESERVATION AND REVIVAL OF THE SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF RUSSIA. IN HONOR OF THE 1000th ANNIVERSARY OF YAROSLAVL: Scientific and Educational Forum

The 1000th anniversary of the city of Yaroslavl will be an important event in the history of contemporary Russia. Yaroslavl is a museum city, a significant center of Russian culture accumulating many of its achievements. The history of Yaroslavl reflects distinguished pages of the history of the Russian State. The names of outstanding people connected with this city have forever been included in the chronicle of Russian culture.

The Russian Academy of Arts and the Russian Academy of Sciences, within the programs of fundamental researches of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Historical and Cultural Heritage and Spiritual Values of Russia” and the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts “Religion, Art and Science in Modern World”, have initiated a Scientific and Cultural Forum “Preservation and Revival of the Spiritual and Cultural Heritage of Russia” to be held in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl in September, 2010. It will include an exhibition of contemporary religious art (works by Academicians and young artists of religious art of the Yaroslavl Eparchy) and a scientific conference with involvement of representatives from the Yaroslavl Eparchy, Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox Humanitarian University, researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Arts, art historians from Yaroslavl museums.

Within the framework of the Forum artists will give masterclasses and create a memorial canvas – “manuscript” to be presented to the city of Yaroslavl as a gift.

The interactive show “Contemporary Religious Art” in the Gallery of the Assumption Cathedral of the city of Yaroslavl to be opened by the Most Reverend Kirill Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov, members of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts. The opening will take place at 12 am in the Assumption Cathedral after the liturgy to be chanted by His Holiness Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

works by Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts: Zurab Tsereteli; Evgeni Maximov; Nickolai Mukhin; Alexander Kornoukhov; icon painting workshops: “Kovcheg” (Yaroslavl); “Pokrov” (Rybinsk); “Lik” (Rybinsk); “Sofia” (Yaroslavl); works by Sergei Sokolov (Yaroslavl) and Michael Shikhanov (Yaroslavl); jewelry workshops: “Workshop Karat-Plyus” (Rostov); “N. Balmasov” (Yaroslavl); “Kavida-Master” (Moscow); Grebennikov’s Workshop” (Veliky Novgorod); church embroidery: “Icon Painting Workshop “Kovcheg” (Yaroslavl); shrouds from monasteries of the Yaroslavl Eparchy; church wood carving: “Blagovest” (Yaroslavl); M. Reshetnikov’s Workshop of Cabinet-Makers” (Yaroslavl); P.Aleshin (Yaroslavl); church ceramics: “M-Studio-Novy Svet” (Yaroslavl); ornamented tiles by E. The show also includes masterclasses in icon painting, fabrication of church ceramics, casting of bells.

It is planned to publish a catalogue of the “Contemporary Religious Art” show and a book of collected articles on the materials of the above Conference.
