December 1: World AIDS Day

01.12.2007 - 01.12.2007

World AIDS Day is observed December 1 each year.
President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli has initiated an establishment of the International Anti-AIDS Foundation for fighting AIDS through art.
Zurab Tsereteli is confident that all possible efforts must be taken to withstand  the dreadful disease. As an artist, he has created a sculptural composition on this theme depicting  figures of a man and a woman standing inside two entwined rings and symbolizing a true love which will save the world.
Zurab Tsereteli suggested holding a global action similar to construction of plague columns in European cities during the epidemic of black death in the Middle Ages. Such anti-AIDS monuments to be erected across the world could become focuses of simultaneous worldwide actions on the World AIDS Day to be arranged under the auspices of UNESCO and United Nations Organization.
Tsereteli’s initiative has been supported by the UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura  and all UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors.
