The opening of the monument to Peter the Great

On September, 25, 2006 the ceremony of the opening of the monument to the Peter the I at the square in front of the hotel “Pribaltiyskaya” on Vasilievsky island took place. The monument was presented to the inhabitants of Saint-Petersburg at the personal exhibition of Tsereteli’s works at the Central Exhibitional Hall “Manezh” in march of 2005. The monument is a gift to the city.

   The opening of the monument became a real festivity. The 6-meter high monument on the 9-meter postament was shown to the public. Mayor of Saint-Petersburg V.I.Matvienko in her speech mentioned that mounting of the monument to Peter the I in XXI century is a symbolic event: “bronze Peter the Great stands on the shore of the Baltic sea, which he loved so much”. This monument is a “gratitude to Peter the I. Saint-Petersburg lives, developes, builts, and this means that dreams of Peter the Great have come true”, told Matvienko. The mayor especially thanked the author of the monument, sculptor Zurab Tsereteli “for the remarkable present to the city”.

The new monument “Peter the Great” is made from bronze on the Saint-Petersburg factory of artistic founding “Monument Sculpture”.
