In 2017 the Russian Academy of Arts is celebrating its 260th anniversary. The Academy is a major center of Russian art culture. It preserves the classical traditions of Russian art school and promotes its development in all modern art directions. Being a heir to the Imperial Academy of Arts which laid the foundations for the great achievements of Russian art in the 18th-20th centuries, the Academy has made a significant contribution to Russian culture. In honor of its 260th anniversary the Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Russian Ministry of Culture has organized a multimedia exhibition project presenting its creative, research and educational activity.

The unique design of the exhibition has been made by the Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts (RAA) Yury Avvakumov. In the halls of the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the RAA (19 Prechistenka street, Moscow) fifty displays in twelve theme pavilions will show video presentations dedicated to the foundation, history and current activity of the Academy. The viewer will have a rare opportunity to see historical photo-materials from the Academy’s archives. The biggest section of the exhibition demonstrates the activity of all the RAA art departments – works by masters of painting, graphic art, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, artists of theater and cinema offering a vast panorama of trends in various types of fine arts. Video presentations also include works by students of the Academy institutes and lyceums, graduates of its creative workshops in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Kazan, Rostov-on-the Don. In showing these works together one can get an impressive picture of the future development of Russian art.

The exhibition covers not only the Academy’s research, museum and educational activity but also focuses on major international projects and the activity of the Academy’s regional departments in the Volga region, in the south of Russia, in the Urals, Siberia and Far East. A special section is dedicated to the performing arts and highlights restoration and technological processes for monumental artworks at the Academy’s foundry “Liteiny Dvor” and Mosaic Workshop which production activity is closely connected with the history of Russian fine arts. In the New Technologies pavilion the viewers will be provided with virtual reality helmets for
penetration into the atmosphere of creativity.

The structure of the exhibition provides a comprehensive view of all areas of the Academy’s activity, high professional skills of its masters, emphasizes the importance of preservation and upgrading of the academic school of art education. The exhibition reveals the advantages of the present three-level system of academic education: lyceum – institute – creative workshop. One of the main ideas of the exhibition is the necessity of understanding art processes of the past centuries and development of art history and criticism as the basis of modern Humanities.
