Solo Show of the People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Burganov in Voronezh

Ivan Kramskoy Regional Art Museum in Voronezh hosts an exhibition of sculpture and graphic art by the world renowned sculptor Alexander Burganov, the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Doctor of Art History, Professor of S. Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry, Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia, Laureate of the USSR State Prize.
Alexander Burganov was born in Baku on March 20, 1935. In 1959 he graduated fr om S. Stroganov Moscow Institute of Arts and Industry. In Alexander Burganov’s creative work there are two enormous and equal worlds: sculpture and graphics. They are inseparable adding each other and revealing the sphere of poetic metaphors – philosophical dialogues between the good and evil, life and death, love and compassion.
Well-known are his sculptures adorning Moscow, these are “Princess Turandot” near E. Vakhtangov Theater; “Pushkin and Natali” at A. Pushkin Museum-Apartment in the Arbat street; monument to Mikhail Lermontov in Molchanovka street, monument to the founder of E. Gnesina Academy of Music; portraits of Russian artists at Tretyakovskaya station of the Moscow Subway, bust of Andrey Tarkovsky in the Big Aphanasievsky Pereulok; reliefs in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and many other works. Among his major sculptures abroad are the monument to Yury Gagarin in Canada, monument to Alexander Pushkin – in Washington (U.S.A.), monument to poet V.A. Zhukovsky in Baden-Baden (Germany), monument “Two Emperors” in Brussels, etc.
Alexander Burganov’s works are in collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, A. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, State Russian Museum, as well as in museums of Germany, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, U.S.A.
The residents of Volonezh know Alexander Burganov as an author of the monument to their countryman, novelist Ivan Bunin erected in 1995 in honor of his 125th birth anniversary.
Alexander Burganov is deservedly considered both an artist of “Severe style” for laconicism and monumentality of his forms and a master of a realistic portrait, whose school bases on the best traditions of Russian plastic art. He is a postmodernist creating expressive metaphorical images through the synthesis of modern and antique classics.
Alexander Burganov is also one of today’s most distinguished surrealists who easily transforms forms to achieve an acute artistic expression of new realities. In this versatility there is an absolute creative freedom, as in any case the author is not simply in the artistic flow of time, but also stands out for his personal handwriting and creative method. The word combination “Burganov’s school of composition” has become a stable term in the teaching practice at the art educational institutions wh ere they study and teach the art of sculpture. Among Burganov’s achievements is the creation of a special genre of plastic composition, he is an author of such unique phenomenon as “sculpture-gesture” coming practically through all his symbolic images.
Today, when in the city space sculptures-monuments have become a personification of history, sculptures-gestures of Alexander Burganov enrich parks, squares and exhibition halls with new sensitive poetic art images.
