The Russian Academy of Arts presents an exhibition of the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Vladimir Sokovnin including the artist’s almost one hundred paintings of various years.

Vladimir Sokovnin was born in Moscow in 1955. In 1982 he graduated from A. Kosygin Moscow Textile Institute, the Department of Applied Arts. Since 1976 he has been a frequent participant of numerous Moscow, Republican and All-Russian exhibitions including international exhibitions in Bratislava (Slovakia), Brno (Czech Republic), Beijing (China), Philadelphia and Washington (U.S.A.). Since 1985 – a Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia. Since 2011 – Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Arts. At present Prof. Vladimir Sokovnin teaches at M. Litovchenko Humanitarian Institute of TV and Radio Broadcasting.

In his strife to portray the modernity in its various manifestations Vladimir Sokovnin turns to different kinds and genres of fine arts. The artist travels a lot in Russia and abroad, enthusiastically works trying to depict the most significant themes and images. The artist’s large-scale canvases prove his ability to organize a complicated space and to achieve the necessary color rhythm.

He has also worked as a cinema artist and designer. He is an author of costume designs for the films “Magicians” and “Kin-Dza-Dza, of the “Memory” triptych now in the Museum of the Great Patriotic War on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, a gallery of Gazprom Company directors, portraits of the First Russian President Boris Yeltsyn,  the Patriarch of All Russia Alexei II, the President of Indonesia Megavati Sucarnoputri and others. Vladimir Sokovnin has been actively involved in the rebirth of the interior decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, recreated the wall paintings in the Ascension Church of the Holy Petrovsky Convent. Of major interest is his gallery of historical portraits.

Among Sokovnin’s landscapes stand out his landscapes of old Russian towns and villages. The appeal to the Russian culture of the past is seen by the artist as a preservation of the national peculiarity of Russian life and Russian Art.

Vladimir Sokovnin is a holder of the order of the Russian Orthodox Church “ – the Order of St. Sergy of Radonezh  III and II rank, the Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for the Recreation of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Diploma of the Russian Ministry of Culture, Gold Medal of the Creative Artists’ Union of  Russia. His works are in collections of several major museums in Russia, as well as in  private collections in France, Germany, China, U.S.A.
