Timely Art. Sculptor Leonid Baranov, His Friends and Characters: Exhibition in Honor of Leonid Baranov’s 70th Anniversary

The exhibition “Timely Art. Sculptor Leonid Baranov, His Friends and Characters” in the exhibition halls of the Russian Academy of Arts has been organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, renowned sculptor Leonid Baranov.

Leonid Baranov was born in Moscow in 1943. He is a graduate fr om V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute wh ere he studied under M.F. Baburin and D.D. Zhilinsky. Since 1969 – Member of the Artists’ Union of the USSR, since 1966 – participant of many Russian and international exhibitions. For the last years Leonid Baranov exhibited his works in a number of his solo shows in Moscow and many other cities of Russia.

Already in the early 1970s Leonid Baranov started working on his vast gallery of  sculptural portraits of distinguished personalities of Russian history and culture, these are Mikhail Lomonosov, Alexander Pushkin, Nickolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Petr Chaikovsky, Anton Chekhov, Russian Emperors Peter I, Catherine II, Paul I, etc., as well as our outstanding contemporaries. Well-known are his monument to Peter I in Rotterdam (1997) and to Fyodor Dostoevsky in Baden-Baden (2004), sculptural composition |”The 18th Century Moscow Architects Vasily Bazhenov and Matvey Kazakov” for Tsaritsyno park ensemble in Moscow (2007),  sculptural group “Peter I and Nickolai Bidloo” for N.N. Burdenko Military Hospital (Moscow, 2007) and many others.    

His works are in collections of many major Russian museums, as well as in private collection in France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland, U.S.A.

Along with the retrospective of his works Leonid Baranov invites a viewer to see parallel creative ways of his friends and contemporaries, such as
