Shroud of the Universe: Exhibition in Honor of the 120th Birth Anniversary of the People’s Artist of the USSR Arkady Plastov

Organized by the Ministry of Art and Culture of the Ulyanovsk Region and the Russian Academy of Arts in honor of the 120th anniversary of the People’s Artist of the USSR, Winner of the USSR State Prizes, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Arkady Plastov (1893-1972), the exhibition in Tsereteli Art Gallery features over 120 paintings and graphic works from the private collection of the artist’s family.

Arkady Plastov was born in 1893 in the village of Prislonikha in the Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) region in the family of icon painters. Continuing the family tradition he studied at the Simbirsk seminary and later graduated from the Ecclesiastical Academy. In 1914 he entered the Moscow Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

The theme of Russian countryside, its nature and everyday life of its people is a focus of his creative work. Arkady Plastov has been confident, that it is life that is a true source of inspiration and ardently realized his dream of creating “a vast cycle of paintings devoted to the epic of peasant life”. Till the end of his life the artist was closely connected with his native land. Through his pictures Plastov tried to find the most important – the sense of our existence and philosophical understanding of the harmony between a man and nature. On display in Tsereteli Art Gallery are his still lives, genre canvases, portraits, water colors and gouaches mostly created in the 1910s-1970s.

The jubilee events also include an exhibition of works by laureates of Arkady Plastov Prize 2012 in London and unveiling of a memorial plaque authored by Mikhail Pereyaslavets on the apartment house №1 in Upper Maslovka street where there was Arkady Plastov’s studio in Moscow.
