Popular Icon: Exhibition in Tsereteli Art Gallery

Tsereteli Art Gallery presents a major exhibition featuring popular icons from museum and private collections. On show are 400 exhibits from more than 30 collections including private collections of such noted art collectors and connoisseurs of icon painting as Eugene Roizman, Alexander Ilyin, Vyacheslav Momot, Michael Chernov and others. The geography of the project stretches from the Siberia to Estonia.

The show is a rare opportunity to see not only traditional icons on wood, but also icons painted on a canvas, the art of enamel, copper-founding plastic art, votive pendants, household and religious items. According to the words of the curator of the exhibition and well-known researcher of icon painting, Doctor of Art History Irina Buseva- Davydova, “popular icons became subjects for collecting not so long ago. In “village” icons we have seen only a simplified variation of the art of icon painting . However, popular icons are sure to be an integral part of the folk art and national culture which played an important role in the life of Russian people reflecting their fundamental ideas of the sacred and beautiful”.
