Exhibition of Sculptures by the People’s Artist of Russia Yury Chernov (1935-2009) at the Russian Academy of Arts

On show at the Russian Academy of Arts is a retrospective of sculptural works by Yury Chernov (1935-2009), the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts.

Yury Chernov is one of the leading masters of Russian sculpture. He was born in Moscow in 1935 and graduated from V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute where he majored in sculpture under the noted Soviet sculptor N.V. Tomsky.

Yury Chernov worked in easel and monumental plastic art. His monuments found their home in many cities of Russia and other countries. Among his last works were his monument to Shalom Aleikhem in Malaya Bronnaya street in Moscow (2001, architect G. Kopans) and monument to Anton Chekhov in the Museum-Preserve “Melikhovo” (2002, architect V. Bukhaev). His works are in collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Museum and many other Russian museums.
