Dedication to the Motherland: Major Retrospective Show of Works by Sergey Tkachev and Alexei Tkachev in the State Tretyakov Gallery

The major retrospective in the State Tretyakov Gallery presents over 160 canvases by Sergey Tkachev (b. 1922) and Alexei Tkachev (b.1925), classics of realistic traditions of the Russian painting school, People’s Artists of the USSR and the Russian Federation, Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts, Winners of the USSR State Prizes.

The main theme in their work is the Motherland: drama pages of its history and the fate of ordinary people in the 20th century; genre scenes of the Russian province. The Tkachev brothers were born in a village in the Bryansk region into a peasant family. They are graduates of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute (Sergey Tkachev – 1946-1952, Alexei Tkachev – 1945-1951), where they studied under the outstanding artist S.V. Gerasimov. Since 1950, they have been working together and independently; each of them is a distinguished master of realistic painting.

On display in the Engineering block of the State Tretyakov Gallery, 12 Lavrushinsky Lane are their works from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the artists’ private collections of paintings produced from the second half of the 1940s till the late 2000th.
