The major retrospective features works by Alexander Burganov, one of the most celebrated Russian masters of contemporary sculpture, the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, winner of the USSR State Prize. The Moscow state museum “Burganov House” set up by the sculptor in 2001 has become a reputed cultural center representing a synthesis of architecture, sculpture, music and theater. Alexander Burganov has donated to the city of Moscow a number of his private collections including works of monumental and easel plastic art, paintings, drawings, historical autographs, rare books and other artworks.

Organized to mark the 75th anniversary of Alexander Burganov, the show is a good opportunity to see the artist’s works produced for the last five years that have been exhibited in Paris and other European cities and are little known to the Moscow public.

Alexander Burganov  is a world renowned sculptor who greatly contributed to the promotion of Russian school of  monumental sculpture. His monuments adorn streets and squares of major cities of Russia, Europe, America and Asia.  Alexander Burganov is represented in museum collections in Russia and other countries.  Well known are his monumental works in Moscow: monument to A. Pushkin and Nataly, Princess Turandot fountain in the Old Arbat street; monuments to Michael Lermontov, Ivan Bunin, to the founder of the Russian Academy of Music Elena Gnesina; sculptural park ensembles of the Ukrainian Boulevard and Sivtsev Vrazhek street, Children’s Music Theater. Alexander Burganov is an author of a vast gallery of portraits of our outstanding contemporaries entitled “People-Legends”, an emblem of the Central Cinema House, sculptural decoration of “Bratislavskaya”, “Lyublino”, “Tretyakovskaya”  Moscow subway stations including portraits of eminent Russian artists.

Alexander Burganov has created his own easily recognizable style, his special metaphorical world in which paradoxical ideas and unpredictable contrasts are embodied in flesh. The sculptor considers himself a follower of a new romantic direction combining the classics and avant-garde in contemporary art.

Alexander Burganov works much in graphic art and projects some graphic methods in sculpture. Catalogs of Burganov’s solo exhibitions frequently contain texts written by the sculptor. It can be said that his style results from the merge of various types of creative work: sculpture, graphic art, literature.

For many years of his teaching activity Prof. Alexander Burganov has raised several generations of talented artists. His son Igor Burganov and his daughter Maria Burganova are also noted masters of sculpture, continuing the father’s traditions in their own way.
