Graphic Works of the People’s Artist of Russia Lev Shepelev Are On Show in the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The exhibition to be opened on the Day of Russian Science, on February 8, in the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences showcases 50 graphic works by Prof. Lev Shepelev, member of the Presidium, Full Member and Academician-Secretary of the Graphic Art Department of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The Russian Academy of Arts and the Russian Academy of Sciences have close business and creative contacts. In 2009 the Archives of the Russian Academy of Arts hosted a major art and documentary exhibition “Arts and Sciences Societas”. Of big interest was a joint international conference “Art and Science in Modern World” held in November, 2009.

Lev Shepelev is a recognized master of graphic art. His work is mainly devoted to the city topic. In his drawings the artist depicts architectural ensembles designed by distinguished architects, famous monuments, cathedrals, museums alongside with ordinary city districts, which appearances become genuine art images sometimes containing a mystery to be discovered only by a true artist.

Lev Shepelev’s graphic works reveal his brilliant craftsmanship, perfect skill in handling complicated graphic techniques.  His favorite is gouache which produces a soft, velvety surface, color strength, splendid, almost pictorial expressiveness.

The artist paints basing on his direct impressions at the same time trying to generalize through characteristic features. He often returns to his favorite motifs, each time making an emphasis on new shades of meaning. For the recent years Lev Shepelev has been creating his sheets-reflections representing various states of nature, showing the “music” of life’s eternal renewal.

From 1990 till 2001 Lev Shepelev was a rector of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute. In 2002 he set up and now heads a Chair in Graphic Art at S. Stroganov Moscow State Arts and Industrial Academy.
