Dialogue with Time: Exhibition Within the Framework of Days of Sofia in Moscow

Tsereteli Art Gallery presents a show of paintings from the Sofia City Art Gallery collection dating from the mid-20th century through the beginning of the 21st century. The exhibition includes 80 works by 46 Bulgarian artists and is an unparalleled opportunity to trace the various development stages of Bulgarian art.

The period of the late 1940s and the 1950s, which was dominated by normative aesthetics, was followed by the 1960s and its young generation of artists who stressed the importance of the development of art. The new generation of artists, including Svetlin Rousev, Ivan Kirkov, Yoan Leviev, Dimiter Kirov, Georgi Bozhilov, Genko Genkov, Georgi Baev, |Magda Abazova, Ivan Voukadinov, Lika Yanko are associated with the process of overcoming naturalism hailing the return of intense color, the expressiveness and monumentality of form, varied texture. Those artists led the way in Bulgarian painting for many decades through their works and truly distinctive artistic approaches.

The said generation of Bulgarian artists owes a lot to painters such as Ivan Nenov, Dechko Uzunov, Vera Nedkova, Vassil Barakov, Stoyan Sotirov, Kiril Petrov, who studied in Munich, Paris, Vienna and whose artistic career started before World War II to be continued in the decades following the end of the war.

The late 1980s and the 1990s are associated with dynamic change in the art scene, a variety of individual artistic approaches, freedom of expression through neoexpressionist and abstract imagery, conceptualization of painting, photography, installations, video art, blurring of boundaries and combination of seemingly incompatible materials, techniques and concepts related to international trends in art, all of which are reflected in the Gallery’s newly-acquired works of art. Slowly, but surely, the new generation of early 21 century artists, including Mihaela Vlasseva and Ivan Kostolov, has been establishing itself in the art of painting.

Dialogue in the art of painting continues – between generations, with time, with the past, with the present, with the future, with us. This dialogue helps us build a comprehensive picture of the world, bringing together the pieces of artistic diversity. Photoreport
