Exhibition of Works by Eugene Maximov and His Pupils

From October 28, 2008 through November 16, 2008 on display in the exhibition halls of the Russian Academy of Arts are works by Eugene Maximov, foremost master of modern monumental painting, People’s Artist of Russia, Full Member  of the Russian Academy of Arts and his pupils. The artist’s works and his school of painting have been recognized throughout the world.

Timed to the 60th anniversary of Eugene Maximov, the exhibition provides a grand-scale survey of the unique talent of the master and artists of his school.  Eugene Maximov, professor,  member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, Academician –Secretary of RAA Department of Painting has devoted all his work to the rebirth of Russian Orthodox churches and recreation of their interior decoration.

The exhibition explores the most distinguished works by Maximov and his pupils produced in various years. Among the highlights are sketches of murals for  Orthodox churches in Russia and other nations, photographs of the restored wall paintings, canvases on religious topic. Eugene Maximov and his group of artists have executed wall paintings in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, in St. George church-monument in Nicosia,  Cyprus; in the complex of cathedrals of Saint-Vvedenskaya Optina Pustyn, Kaluga region.

They have created mosaics and frescoes in the Life-Giving Trinity Church in Vishnyaki (Moscow); frescoes in the church of St. Martyr Tsarevitch Dmitri at the Golitsyn hospital (8 Leninski Prospect, Moscow);  wall paintings in the Sisters’ church of the First Gradskaya Hospital (10 Leninski prospect, Moscow), murals  in St. Nicholas church (Vyshni Volochek, Tver region);  wall paintings in St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Yasenevo (Moscow), Optina Community (Moscow) and others.

Maximov has been in charge of the restoration of wall paintings in the Russian Orthodox St. Nicholas Cathedral of New York completed in 2002 by the centenary of the Cathedral.  For this work he was honored with the prize For the Best Design of the American Association of Architects. Among his other major works are wall paintings in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Kaliningrad (Russia) and in the church  of Modest of Jerusalem in Simon-Peter monastery on Afon mountain (Greece).

For many years Maximov has been teaching in V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute where he heads the department of painting and studio of monumental painting. For more than 10 years, Maximov has been heading the chair of  monumental painting of the department of religious art in the Moscow St. Tikhon  Theological University. He has created his own school of monumental church painting recognized in Russia and many other countries.
