World Creation: Exhibition of Works by the People’s Artist of Russia Dmitry Zhilinsky at the Russian Academy of Arts

The Russian Academy of Arts presents an exhibition of works by the distinguished painter, People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Laureate of State Prizes of Russia Dmitry Zhilinsky (1927-2015) timed to the 90th anniversary of the master.
The exhibition at the Russian Academy of Arts includes more than 150 sketches and drawings executed by the artist for his most well-known paintings and portraits. Dmitry Zhilinsky is an eminent master of drawing, composition and portrait. In his works the artist turns to the highest manifestations of human spirit, professes high moral and aesthetic ideals, harmony and beauty, perfection of plastic form. His paintings are full of inner expressiveness and emotional attitude.
Dmitry Zhilinsky was born in 1927 in Sochi. In 1944-46 he studied at the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative art, between 1946 – 1951 – in the painting department of V. Surikov Moscow State Art Institute under such talented artists as N.M. Chernyshev, S.A. Chuikov, P.D. Korin, A.M. Gritsai. In Moscow Dmitry Zhilinsky lived with his relatives – remarkable artists N.Y. Simonovich-Efimova and I.S. Efimov, their neighbors were such artists as V.A. Favorsky, D.M. Shakhovskoy and others.
Since 1951 he was a frequent participant of art shows. The artist’s works prove his desire to rely primarily on classical traditions and Old Russian painting. From the beginning in his creative work he has used a technique of painting with tempera on gesso. His canvases are characterized by the refined brushwork and complex structure of space.
The heroes of his portraits noted for the accuracy of their imagers are artists, composers, musicians, figures of culture, members of his family and friends. In 2004-2005 the master created for the International House of Music in Moscow a cycle of portraits of Russian composers of the 20th century: Sergey Rakhmaninov, Dmitry Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, Georgi Sviridov, Sergey Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturyan, Alexander Glazunov, Alexander Skryabin, Alfred Schnitke, Edison Denisov.
Dmitry Zhilinsky has been actively involved in the teaching activity: in 1951-1973 he taught drawing at V. Surikov Moscow Art Institute and was a Professor of the Chair for Drawing. In 1973-1980 Prof. Dmitry Zhilinsky headed the Drawing and Painting Department of the Moscow State University for Printing Arts. The master’s works are in collections of major museums in Russia and other countries, as well as in private collections.
